These photographs were made a gift to the Library by Corinne Geras of Escondido, California, on January 30, 1999.
Scope and Content Information
This collection consists of copies of eighteen original photographs on four pages of an album kept by Jackson Davis documenting his trip to Liberia in 1944. Davis traveled to Liberia for the International Missionary Council to make a field study of African education and agriculture and to consider how the total resources of African churches and missions could be utilized to the best advantage. His observations were included in the book Africa Advancing . Photographs include scenes in Monrovia and the countryside including the Booker T. Washington Institute; the College of West Africa; the Episcopal Mission School; Liberia College, faculty and students; the hospital of the Negro Baptist Mission; a community school; and street and market scenes.
